Website Updates

Two new Memorials for Robert and Floyd Garfield here:  Memorials

The Family Tree portion of the website has been started.  You can check it out and follow the progress here:  Garfield Family Tree.

A screen shot of Edward Garfield’s page.

Each individuals page will have a biography if one is written on the right side, a picture if one exists in the upper left corner and links to any other pictures, records and a larger overview of their family tree in the lower left corner.  You can follow the other links on the page to navigate through the tree.

The Index is now an imported spreadsheet. Screen shot below.

The icon in the upper right corner with four arrows will make the spreadsheet full size in a new tab/window.  The icons at bottom center will allow you to zoom in and out.  The linked text under the Records, Photos, Tree headings will open those pages in a new tab/window.

For now the index is all together, I may have to break it down by surnames once it gets more complete but it will still work the same.

If anyone has trouble reading any text on a page please let me know if it is because of its size or color so I can make appropriate adjustments.  All other comments are also welcomed.

Thank you and happy researching!

1815 Land Transaction Between James Prendergast and Samuel Garfield

This is the earliest land record I have for a Garfield in Chautauqua County.  It references the land bought by Samuel Garfield in the Town of Busti, Chautauqua County, New York State.  Samuel and his family, along with his brother Joseph and his family, continued to live in the area for generations and unto this day you can still find some of his descendants in the area.  Samuel was one of the first three Assessors when the town was formed in 1823.

Some Old Wills and Probate Documents

This week I am highlighting some of the oldest Probate records I have concerning the early Garfield family in England. Information dating back this far is currently scarce and I am still trying to fill in gaps and find documents to confirm the information we have on these ancestors.

The first document is an inventory of Edward Garfield (grandfather to Edward Garfield who came to America) who was buried on March 12, 1584/85 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England.

This next group of documents I have here are an Inventory of Henry Garfield of Bilton dated 1582 (my oldest probate record for Garfields) and the Will and Inventory of William Garfield of Bilton dated 1584. I have no further information regarding these men. However, interesting to me at the moment is that Bilton is only about 3.5 miles from Hillmorton, both now belonging to the area of Rugby in present UK. The dates and close location lead me to wonder if they were brothers to Edward Garfield and if they had any further connections to the other numerous Garfield families that can be found in that general area over the next hundred years.
